Week #1: creating A Blog

What I harvest from establishing my blog: The term 'Blog' may be somewhat intimidating for a conventional person. Well, it used to be for me, but with greater understanding, it feels somewhat like a personal diary. Before the start of this class, I absolutely had no idea nor experience in creating a blog. Now, I do realize that blog is a fundamental and critical means to express my feelings or things I want others to know. In addition, I discover that the blog entries are open to comments and inputs by viewers. What I think about creating a blog: Challenging yet exciting with the blog setting tips succintly given.

  2. Before starting my blog I wanted to clarify what a blog really is. I read a lot of definitions and I’d like to share my favourite one with you: ” A blog is neither a diary nor a journal. Many people think of blogging in relation to those two things, confessional or practical. It is neither but includes elements of both.” Lemn Sissay

I am a first blogger too, and I find it challenging and exciting too.

  3. I truly agree that a blog includes both elements of a diary and a journal. This is in line with what I previously stated that a blog is "somewhat like" a personal diary, it doesn't mean it is a diary per se.
It is indisputable that there are numerous definitions of a blog, however you want to look at its functions. When a blog contains day to day experiences it has a characteristic of a personal diary, however it can also be more than just a diary given its other functions: sharing ideas or thoughts with the public and even keeping in touch with friends and students.

To sum up, a blog could be an online diary if the blogger wants it to be, just like Claudio Pinhanez's blog : "Open Diary"

  4. Hi, Lina!
It is good to know that you find blogging fundamental for expressing what you think. I bet our students may feel the same way, and it can be one of our roles to get students to have an opportunity to express themselves through technology as long as they use it carefully.

  5. Hi Lina: the original word "blog" is a mix of "web" + "log", for blog. However it is a tool, like a chalkboard is a tool. You can use a chalkboard for many things, as you can use a Blog for many things. And most tools can be used for different purposes, even things unintended.

Indeed, I have used a blog for many purposes: as a personal journal of something I was doing (keeping track of my running); taking notes at conferences; sharing information with students; sharing information with other teachers; as a website; as a way to communicate with collaborators about projects; and as a place to share pictures and information with my friends and family. I believe it is a pretty versatile tool, and that is what makes it so hard to define. -Robert

  6. Hi Robert
Many thanks for your explanation. Now I find blogging very interesting and will try to motivate my students to have ones too.
