Week#4 : Writing/Reading Skills, A Students’ Need-Driven Approach, Tech-Enhanced Lesson Plan

In one of the articles that I read, Isabella Villa Boas elaborated how to use social media (Blogs and Ning Network) to promote process writing. She quoted Bloch: "Blogs are an ideal resource for teaching writing because they are easy to create and maintain, supportive for group work, feedback and collaboration and enable students to write outside the class." (http://americanenglish.state.gov/files/ae/resource_files/49_2_4_boas_0.pdf)
In my opinion, having a class blog is a great idea to encourage the students to give more comments or opinion without hesitation as they are not exposed to any audience.
So I started to introduce my students about blogging and other tech-tools and I plan to have the students conduct pre-writing, drafting, peer review and revising using the blogs in writing task. I have also explored how to use www.vocabulary.com to increase the vocabulary acquisition and www.storybird.com for enhancing the reading and writing skills. I plan to implement these tools in my class gradually.

The Project task step this week is to identify our students’ problem and their need in order for us to develop suitable tech-tools to overcome the problem. I always know the problem of my class and all this time I just applied the conventional ways to solve it. Now I realize that technology can do me a big favor.

Eventually, the significance comes from composing a technology-enhanced lesson plan. I am sure that making lesson plan is ubiquitous for teachers but this one is rather different. First I had to think of a lesson to teach then which technology tools can contribute for a better result, next have to fit it to the format provided. We are suggested to write the lesson plan using Google.docs which is quite similar to Microsoft Word 2003.

As the week passes, more and more tech-tools and knowledge are accumulated in my portfolio.

  2. Hello Lina,
It's nice for your students to have thier own blog (just like us). Blogging is one of collaborative learning space for students to improve their writing skill. Hope that your students enjoy blogging and be able to improve thier English skill bit by bit.
Using Storybird is also a good idea to have your students practice English skills in an enjoyable way. Effective learning happens when students feel motivated to learn.

I agree with you that making a technology-enhanced lesson plan is different from the traditional one. Plan B should be included or we need to have a back up lesson plan in case that the technology goes wrong.

Well, may I suggest you learn more about Google Doc? It also can be an alternative tool to support collaborative writing activity.

    Have a good day:)

Yes, I agree with you. Google Docs is a very powerful tool that enables teachers to assign homework and do correction outside the class. Students can also share their homework with peers on line. Additionally, There are still many tools at Google Sites waiting for us to explore and utilize, such as Google Drive, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Drawings, Google+, Groups, Images search, etc.

Each tool serves its own function. All we have to do is to figure out our need first, then get the right and suitable tool.Don't you think?

  5. Hello Lina.
I have seen your lesson plan and am sincerely positively impressed, amazed at how much you successfully managed to accomplish. The learners' blogs for drafting, and publishing their work peer-review and evaluation. What I mostly appreciated was the in-class pair work and recording the dialogue for further being posted on a voice thread account and evaluated. A great practice for your students, and an increased interest that can be noticed even here.
    Good luck, respectfully Galina Petrea.

    1. Hi Galina

Thank you for your compliment. It is really encouraging. I think we all as teachers share the same goal (trying the best way for our students).
Hopefully we perpetually share our experience, knowledge and findings.

    1. Hi Hanan

Your Blog is appealing too, particularly the quotes. Blog is good to have the students' reflections, but for submissions of assignments it is more effective to use Google Docs, as students can share and comment on one another's while teachers correct it outside the class. It is very time saving.
